About Awendaw
Awendaw was settled in 1696 by a group of “dissenters” from Salem, Massachusetts, who were fleeing the region in the aftermath of the Salem Witch Trials. The town’s name is believed to come from the Sewee tribe’s word for “red clay.”
To get to the airport From Awendaw, take US-17 S to I-526 W toward North Charleston. The drive to Charleston International Airport (CHS) is approximately 35–45 minutes.
