About James Island
James Island was the site of the Battle of Secessionville on June 16, 1862. This Civil War engagement was the only major attempt by the Union Army to capture Charleston by land. The Confederate victory there was a significant morale boost for the city’s defenders.
To get to the airport From James Island, take the James Island Expy (SC-30) to Downtown Charleston. Merge onto I-26 W, then take I-526 W toward Savannah/Airport. Use Exit 16 for Charleston International Airport (CHS). The drive is approximately 25-30 minutes.
