About Downtown Charleston
Founded in 1670 as Charles Town (in honor of King Charles II of England), the city was originally located at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River. In 1680, the settlement was moved to its current, more defensible location on the peninsula, then known as Oyster Point.
To get to the airport From the Downtown Peninsula, take I-26 W toward North Charleston/Columbia. Merge onto I-526 W toward Savannah/Airport and take Exit 16 for Charleston International Airport (CHS). The drive is approximately 20-25 minutes.
